Types of warranty coverage

A solar system may include several separate warranties.

These warranties may be supplied by:

  • Top One Solar
  • The solar panel manufacturer
  • The inverter manufacturer
  • The battery manufacturer
  • The mounting-system manufacturer
  • Another product supplier or manufacturer

The warranty period, coverage and conditions may differ between products.

Customers should refer to their quotation, invoice, installation agreement, product documentation and manufacturer warranty documents for the exact warranty terms that apply to their system.

Solar panel product warranty

A solar panel product warranty generally covers eligible manufacturing or material defects in the panel.

Depending on the manufacturer’s terms, it may cover problems such as:

  • Defective materials
  • Manufacturing faults
  • Junction-box faults
  • Premature component failure
  • Certain structural defects
  • Other faults listed in the manufacturer’s warranty

The product warranty does not automatically cover every reduction in energy production. Performance coverage may be provided under a separate solar panel performance warranty.

The exact warranty period must be confirmed from the installed panel manufacturer’s documentation.

Solar panel performance warranty

A solar panel performance warranty generally covers the panel’s expected power output over a stated period.

Solar panels naturally reduce in output over time. The manufacturer may warrant that panel output will remain above a stated percentage during the warranty period.

A performance warranty claim may require:

  • System production records
  • Panel testing
  • Inverter data
  • Monitoring information
  • Inspection of the installation
  • Confirmation that shading, dirt, damage or another external factor is not causing the problem

A lower electricity bill saving or lower-than-expected household benefit does not automatically mean the panels have failed their performance warranty.

Inverter warranty

The inverter manufacturer’s warranty may cover eligible defects or failures affecting the inverter.

Depending on the product and manufacturer, warranty support may include:

  • Remote technical assessment
  • Repair
  • Replacement parts
  • Replacement inverter
  • Manufacturer-authorised service
  • Another remedy permitted under the warranty

The warranty may not include all labour, travel, freight, access equipment or reinstallation costs unless those costs are specifically covered.

The exact inverter warranty period and conditions are stated in the applicable manufacturer warranty documents.

Battery warranty

Where a battery system is installed, the battery manufacturer may provide a product or performance warranty.

Battery warranty coverage may depend on:

  • Warranty period
  • Number of operating cycles
  • Energy throughput
  • Remaining storage capacity
  • Operating temperature
  • Approved system configuration
  • Internet connectivity
  • Software updates
  • Correct use and maintenance
  • Manufacturer monitoring requirements

Battery capacity reduces gradually through normal use. A reduction within the manufacturer’s permitted limits may not be treated as a warranty fault.

Customers should follow all operating, safety and maintenance instructions supplied with the battery.

Mounting and electrical component warranties

Mounting equipment, isolators, switches, monitoring devices and other solar-system components may have their own manufacturer warranties.

Coverage and warranty periods differ by product.

Top One Solar may assist the customer in identifying the relevant manufacturer and warranty process where the product was supplied as part of the installation.

Workmanship warranty

A workmanship warranty covers eligible faults caused by installation work completed by Top One Solar or its authorised contractors.

The workmanship warranty period must be confirmed in the customer’s quotation, installation agreement or warranty certificate.

Subject to the applicable terms, workmanship coverage may include faults caused by:

  • Incorrect mounting
  • Incorrect wiring
  • Improper equipment installation
  • Installation-related water entry
  • Loose installation components
  • Other defects directly caused by the installation work

The workmanship warranty does not cover faults caused by product manufacturing defects, building defects, storm damage, misuse, third-party work or events outside the installer’s control.

Solar panel removal and reinstallation

Where Top One Solar removes and reinstalls an existing solar system, warranty coverage applies only to the work and products stated in the accepted quotation.

Existing equipment may already be:

  • Aged
  • Damaged
  • Corroded
  • Out of manufacturer warranty
  • Non-compliant
  • Difficult to remove safely
  • Unsuitable for reinstallation

Top One Solar does not provide a new manufacturer warranty for existing customer equipment.

Any replacement components or extra work required during removal or reinstallation may be quoted separately.

Roof and property conditions

Solar warranty coverage does not automatically include repairs to pre-existing roof or building defects.

Examples include:

  • Cracked or damaged roof tiles
  • Rusted roof sheets
  • Existing roof leaks
  • Weak roof structures
  • Deteriorated sealants
  • Asbestos
  • Building movement
  • Damage caused by earlier contractors

Where a fault is caused directly by Top One Solar’s installation workmanship, it will be reviewed under the applicable workmanship warranty and Australian Consumer Law.

Bird mesh and pest-protection products

Bird mesh and pest-protection products are intended to reduce access beneath solar panels.

They do not guarantee complete prevention of:

  • Bird activity
  • Pest entry
  • Nesting
  • Debris buildup
  • Vegetation growth
  • Damage outside the protected area

Warranty coverage applies only to eligible defects in the supplied product or installation work. It does not cover ongoing pest control or general property maintenance.

What may not be covered

Subject to Australian Consumer Law, warranty coverage may not apply where a fault or damage results from:

  • Misuse or neglect
  • Accidental or deliberate damage
  • Failure to follow operating instructions
  • Unauthorised modifications
  • Repairs completed by another contractor
  • Removal or relocation by another party
  • Storm, hail, flood, fire or lightning
  • Power surges or grid faults
  • Pest or animal damage
  • Vegetation or shading
  • Roof or building movement
  • Corrosion caused by environmental conditions
  • Failure of internet or monitoring services
  • Customer-supplied equipment
  • Normal wear and tear
  • Cosmetic changes that do not affect operation
  • Failure to complete required maintenance
  • A cause excluded by the relevant manufacturer warranty

These exclusions do not remove any legal rights that cannot be excluded.

Maintenance responsibilities

Customers should take reasonable care of their solar system.

Recommended actions may include:

  • Keeping panels reasonably clean
  • Preventing excessive vegetation and shading
  • Checking monitoring alerts
  • Reporting faults promptly
  • Keeping inverter ventilation areas clear
  • Following battery safety instructions
  • Arranging inspections where recommended
  • Preventing unauthorised modifications
  • Keeping warranty and installation documents

Failure to maintain the system may affect warranty coverage where the lack of maintenance caused or contributed to the fault.

Internet and monitoring services

Online monitoring may depend on:

  • Internet access
  • Wi-Fi signal
  • Customer network settings
  • Manufacturer servers
  • Third-party software
  • Mobile applications
  • Compatible devices

Loss of monitoring access does not always mean the solar system has stopped producing electricity.

Internet, app or server failures outside Top One Solar’s control may not be covered under the workmanship warranty.

  • Quotation or invoice number
  • Installation date, where known
  • Product brand and model, where known
  • Description of the problem
  • Date the issue started
  • Photographs or videos
  • Inverter error codes
  • Monitoring screenshots
  • Any relevant documents

Providing complete information may help the claim move faster.

Warranty assessment process

After receiving a claim, Top One Solar may:

  • Review installation records
  • Review photographs and system documents
  • Request additional information
  • Conduct remote monitoring checks
  • Ask the customer to restart or test equipment
  • Contact the manufacturer or supplier
  • Arrange a site inspection
  • Refer the matter to an authorised service agent

The time required will depend on the fault, product availability, site access and whether manufacturer approval is required.

Site inspections and call-out fees

A site inspection may be needed to identify the cause of a reported problem.

A call-out, labour or inspection fee may apply where:

  • No fault is found
  • The fault is not covered by warranty
  • The issue relates to customer-supplied equipment
  • The problem was caused by another contractor
  • The fault is caused by internet, retailer or grid issues
  • The system has been modified without approval
  • The issue results from excluded damage or poor maintenance

Where reasonably possible, the customer will be told about any possible fee before the visit.

No fee will limit rights available under the Australian Consumer Law.

Manufacturer warranty claims

Some product claims must be assessed or approved by the manufacturer.

Top One Solar may assist by:

  • Identifying the product
  • Providing installation documents
  • Submitting fault information
  • Communicating with the supplier or manufacturer
  • Arranging access for an approved technician

The manufacturer may require testing, photographs, data records or return of the product.

Manufacturer processing times and decisions may be outside Top One Solar’s control.

Repair, replacement and other remedies

Depending on the cause of the fault and applicable rights, a warranty outcome may include:

  • Technical support
  • Adjustment
  • Repair
  • Replacement parts
  • Replacement product
  • Reinstallation
  • Refund
  • Another remedy required by law

Replacement products may be new, refurbished or equivalent where permitted by the applicable warranty and law.

A replacement may differ in appearance, dimensions or model where the original product is no longer available.

Labour, freight and access costs

Some manufacturer warranties cover only the product and may not cover:

  • Technician labour
  • Freight
  • Travel
  • Scaffolding
  • Crane hire
  • Roof access equipment
  • Removal
  • Reinstallation
  • Testing
  • Electrical upgrades

Whether these costs are payable depends on:

  • The manufacturer warranty
  • The workmanship warranty
  • The accepted quotation
  • Australian Consumer Law
  • The cause of the fault

Customers should not assume that every related cost is automatically included in a manufacturer product warranty.

System downtime and financial losses

Top One Solar will make reasonable efforts to assess eligible warranty claims.

However, subject to applicable law, warranties do not normally guarantee compensation for:

  • Lost electricity production
  • Higher electricity bills
  • Lost feed-in tariffs
  • Business interruption
  • Internet outages
  • Network restrictions
  • Delays caused by manufacturers or suppliers

Nothing in this section excludes compensation or another remedy where it must be provided under Australian Consumer Law.

Changes to property ownership

Where a property is sold, product or workmanship warranty transfer rights will depend on the applicable warranty terms.

The new owner should retain:

  • Original quotation
  • Invoice
  • Installation documents
  • Compliance certificates
  • Product serial numbers
  • Warranty certificates
  • Monitoring details
  • Service records

The customer should contact Top One Solar or the product manufacturer to confirm whether a warranty can be transferred.

Australian Consumer Law

Manufacturer and workmanship warranties are additional to consumer rights under the Australian Consumer Law.

Consumer guarantees apply automatically and cannot be removed by a business warranty. Depending on the problem, a customer may be entitled to a repair, replacement, refund, cancellation or another remedy. These rights may continue for a reasonable period even after a written warranty has expired.

Nothing on this page excludes, restricts or changes a right or remedy that cannot legally be excluded.

Complaints about warranty claims

Customers who are dissatisfied with the handling or outcome of a warranty claim may submit a complaint under the Top One Solar Complaints Handling Policy.

Contact:

Email: Info@TopOneSolar.com.au
Phone: 0449 777 766
Alternative phone: 0416 666 644

Top One Solar may update this page when:

  • Products change
  • Manufacturers change their warranty terms
  • Business procedures change
  • Legal requirements change
